What is it's purpose?** A: This is the black carbon filter that comes attached to the HEPA filters you buy. It is what collects a lot of physical dust and things and keeps the HEPA filter (which is much more expensive) lasting longer. I can usually change this carbon filter out twice for every HEPA filter change out. **Q: how do you install these do you attach to the orginal filter via the velcrow?** A: Do I put it in the front or back of the filter holder? I read it can be done either way. Had it in the back, then front. My fish aquarium back and the fish are healthy. **Q: Do you have to buy these as well as the hepa filters or will the hepa filters alone be sufficient?** A: I use both. I change these pre-filters every month, which I find to extend the life of the hepa filters.
