The leads won't break from my experience. I use this sharpener for soft and extra soft charcoal pencils, med, hard, graphite 2B - 8B, soft pastel pencils, carbon pencils, colored pencils, just everything. I even use it to point the tip on the unraveling charcoal pencils, after I unravel, of course. So far no broken leads, all perfect. They only need a couple spins, and you can easily be sure not to shorten the pencil. Even if you wait for the LED for a nice sharp point, it only shortens it by 1/8 inch. But I just put them in for a couple revolutions, and they're sharp enough without being shorter. I had also bought him 6 boxes of 36 count Ticonderoga Beginners - Primary Size pencils (extra fat). He loves his sharpner so much that he decided to sharpen all 216 pencils. When doing homework at night he would purposely press hard to break the lead, just so that he could run back and sharpen his pencil with it. We had to start keeping 5 or 6 pencils at a time at the table while doing homework just to avoid that. If this sharpner can put up to his daily abuse, it should do fine in a classroom setting. **Q: This is for the company: After 3 yrs, my sharpener now squeals when sharpening a pencil.
