It moves to the side easily so you can converse around it, and the light is perfect for reading on a kindle or reading an old-fashioned book. We had little problem assembling it, once we discovered that the little screws that hold the pole in the bottom plate were already screwed in. You have to loosen them to push the pole into its slot on the bottom plate.The only reason I gave this lamp 4 instead of 5 stars is that it doesn't have a dimmer switch.
