It is very thin and the main purpose is definitely to prevent water or any spills from seeping to the wood floor under it. The red is pretty similar to the photo, but a little brighter. I do not recommend this color rug if you have a white dog. It shows every bit of fur and catches most of it due to the material. Good option for the price.
