I use mine to put in Ammonium granules to filter out the ammonia. It fits behind my filter cartridge. I like to think that it has been effective. **Q: I'll be using two of these, and two disposable .Does it matter which is in front and which is in back? Is this overkill?** A: Hey Joseph!If you are putting live plants in your aquarium you don't want to use the disposable ones at all. The carbon filtration takes dissolved organic carbons out of the water and plants need those.But... no plants, then no worries.I bought 4 of these. I put filter floss in two cartridges and bio media in another two cartridges. Bio media first to catch all the big stuff and get that great bacterial load growing which does most of your real waste management for you (biological filtration). That and your live plants ;)But even with no plants, and no need to avoid the carbon filter, the great thing about bio media is that to clean it you just give it a vigorous shake in a pail of old tank water (or clean de-chlorinated water)! That way you preserve your biological filter and never need to replace it.
