Overall, it reminds me of The Chronicles of Loresse by Melissa Bitter, only better! I loved The Artful Apprentice--it goes up with The School of Hard Knocks and Trial by Fire as my favorite books in the series! Emily is coming into her own as a sorceress, and has to balance learning magic with keeping her own integrity--all while studying advanced magic in a medieval like world with Kings and Renaissance like politics. My only question is shouldn't Emily have thought about the consequences of how Void might respond when he finds out what Emily did in 10 or 12 years? Void will still be a far more powerful, deadly sorcerer! Still, overall, a great book! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Like a speed bump in a busy road *by J***E on Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2020* So if you’re like me and you’ve been reading this series for the past 18 books you’ve liked it. Every book so far has actually gotten a five star review from me. The books followed someone of a pattern initially there was a book about school and learning more magic was developed in introduced into the series and then the following book was an adventure. We saw that several times in the Siri throughout Emily’s years atWhitehall. We got to know the world we got to see some villains introduced to some interesting characters that was all great. Now she’s beginning to mature and come to her on as an adult she has her on University and she starts her apprenticeship. Not for many of us we have been waiting on this moment what is she going to learn What a whore apprenticeship look like what task if any will she be assigned. No this was a great story but it fell flat to be honest. I didn’t get anything out of the apprenticeship that made me go wow OK that’s cool that’s great. Now the latter portion of the book is a mystery quite literally a mystery. To be honest I somewhat saw the ending it wasn’t a great mystery if you think about it. Even if you don’t think about it when you get to the end it’s not going to change you or the story really. This book is almost like a speed bump it does nothing for me it just slows me down and really makes me wonder what’s coming next.We are literally approaching 20 books in the series now and I think it is worth bringing up the fact that I want to know who is this mean villain here. We’ve seen them in previous epilogues of other books not saying they appear in this epilogue but who is working behind the scenes here as the truly truly bad guy I want to know that now or at least I want to be shown more of that now. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Possibly the best in the series *by D***D on Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2020* Emily is back in school, with Void, finally apprenticed with him as her master. But now it's one on one, and though not cruel, Void is a hard taskmaster. And Emily's mind and skills are expanding. And there are tests! But Emily has a few surprises of her own as possibly the greatest, most powerful sorcerer of the age works to teach her how to REALLY do magic! Then comes a big test, sink or swim in the real world. It's a test with no instructions. Figure out what Void expects her to do, and "take care of it." There is a whodunit, mighty deeds, traitors, and a surprising application of "The cold equations" Starts slow, but hard to put down, and the big test is a nail biter. There are lots of references to recent stories in the series, and some plot elements depend on major and minor plot issues that have gone before. Nuttall didn't cheat. Everything in this story has been mentioned before, so the deus ex machina is really not, sort of! And a promise of at least another soon! This series is definitely among Nuttall's best. Absolutely not a knockoff of Harry Potter, but what that series could have been, if not locked into magical imagery for early teens. Emily is a very real person, growing into her skills as well as becoming an adult.
