A: A mil is one thousanth of an inch so 5.5 mil=0.0055 inch. A medical light duty glove is usually about 3mil so the 5.5- 6mil thickness is a medium duty glove. You can also get a heavy glove which has a thickness of about 8mil. I use the 5.5 and 6 mil glove as a diesel mechanic. They are fairly tough without loosing fingertip sensitivity like in the 8mil.
