I use this when I hike, I have collected river water through those filter squeeze bags and put that water in there and then let the UV light do the rest and it worked great! Didn't get sick from the river water so I'd call that a success. (Proceed with caution drinking river water some may have deadly bacteria that I'm not sure this UV light could get rid of)
