## Description

StarTech.com''s eSATA SATA adapter plate adds external data support to any existing Serial ATA controller, adding two eSATA ports for connection to external SATA devices. The adapter plate can be mounted to the rear panel of the computer case, providing straightforward eSATA to SATA connections and allowing users to connect their eSATA device (hard drive enclosure, etc.) to the provided eSATA port which is an extension of the motherboard SATA data connector. Designed to take advantage of the increased data integrity provided by external hard drives or RAID devices that support eSATA connections, the eSATA SATA adapter supports data transfer rates of up to 300 MBps and is backed by StarTech.com''s Lifetime Warranty.

Review: Easy way to utilize unused SATA ports as eSATA - I'm using this with an ASUS TUF GAMING Z590 PLUS Wi-Fi motherboard, and so far, it has worked exactly as expected. Having two eSATA ports is nice, especially if you need to use a SATA based optical drive on a PC which does not have any 5.25 inch bays. There are several other reasons one may want to use eSATA. USB to SATA adapters do NOT support S.M.A.R.T or TRIM, both of which will work via eSATA. Another instance where using eSATA might be useful, is if your PC only has a single USB controller (which is common for most Intel motherboards). USB power can be a bit finicky, and the more USB devices you attach to a single controller, the higher the likelyhood of running in to some random USB power issue that can take your entire controller offline. TL;DR If you find yourself needing to connect multiple SATA devices to your PC externally, this is an excellent approach if you are looking to have options that don't involve USB to SATA adapters.
Review: Too short - I had an old external drive dock that I wanted to use. The cable works fine but I took one star off because the cables should be at leased 2 inches longer.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What about power?**
A: eSATA does not provide any power. You'd typically use an eSATA port with an external drive enclosure that has its own power supply.

**Q: What cable goes between this esata adapter plate and the external sata drive? the external drive has a flat port, not "l" shaped.**
A: You need an eSATA cable. Here's one: https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-108791-6-Feet-External-Shielded/dp/B009GUL1VM/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_147_lp_t_3/133-8936100-0506459?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=HMC3NS4Q8W7KVFB3SWS3

**Q: can I use this to connect a port multiplier such as a 4 drive enclosure?**
A: You can connect the 4 drive enclosure by eSATA wityh this, but your motherboard's SATA controller needs to be able to support port multiplying with eSATA. If it does, then your computer should recognize all drives.

**Q: Do you have one that supports internal sata power and data ports (i have an external drive enclosure with separate sata and power connections)?**
A: You are looking for eSATAp variants and connections. Where "e" means External, "SATA" means Serial Advanced Technology Attachment, "p" means Power over connection.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Too short

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent interface to add ESATA ports to a desktop unit.
*by B***M on February 1, 2022*

High quality bracket and connectors. The SATA cables are a bit short and just barely made it to the SATA ports on an ASUS motherboard. On an ASUS board, the SATA ports are located farthest from the back of the desktop case which is worst case. Even with that, the cables were still long enough to just reach the port connectors, so this worked out well. I've attached a 6 foot ESATA cable to the computer and been able to run an external CD/DVD drive at top speed with no problems or hickups. Works great. BobM
