This item has an axe head weight of 3.5 Lbs and a handle length of 30 inches. The head is the product of blasted and clear-lacquered ironwork and the curved shaft is made of US-sourced hickory. That handle is treated with linseed oil. The Hults Bruk axe head is hand-forged and made from Swedish axe steel in a foundry that has been in operation since 1697. As part of the hand grinding production process, the steel is struck multiple times thereby increasing its density and resulting in more durability of the axe. The head is constructed in such a way that there is a tempered zone designed to hold a very sharp edge even after many sharpenings. The hickory handle is treated with linseed oil. Each axe comes with a traditional leather protective sheath that is embellished with some unique Swedish decorative elements. The head design works beautifully for splitting. Weighted and balanced perfectly, you can split waaaaay longer than with a maul. If you are like me and miss your intended target and smash the axe handle into the chopping block, you may want to proactively wrap the axe handle right underneath the head. Leather or some of the commercially available cast type wraps will work fine and stop wood from smashing into wood. Any time the axe head is placed on the target log...wood is moving. Quality and effectiveness is far above that of a typical hardware axe. Wear gloves...this is one sharp axe. Now that I'm about eight cords into the winter and have just polished off that last of my current load of rounds, the time has come. This is as near a perfect tool as I've ever had the pleasure to use. It's light in the hand compared to any maul, which allows for longer duration of your splitting session. The handle on mine is a truly beautiful piece of hickory, straight and lovingly shaped and finished. The head has some few imperfections, as another reviewer noted, the flat striking face isn't perfectly square, but nothing that has ever affected performance in any way. The hand forged look adds to the charm.I own many means of splitting firewood, including a 27 ton hydraulic log splitter, But this one is by far my favorite.I will note that the ax I've been using is the second one I received. The first one came with the blade mounted at about a 15° twist from the plane of the handle and was not usable. The company in the buybox that got my order, I don't remember who, proved to be unreachable, but Amazon kept their end up, refunded my money without question and sent me a new ax. I'd suggest that if you're unfortunate enough to get a lemon, you return it and have it replaced.
