The opening I use is 43 inches and it's very sturdy. 51 and 1/4 seems too wide for this gate. **Q: The size Im looking at says 52x2x30 Is that length before adding the extensions?** A: i believe thats the maximum size using the extensions that come with it. **Q: Will it fit 35.5" opening?** A: I use it on a 48" opening, so it should on a 35.5" opening. **Q: does it fit 35,5" opening?** A: It should. There is no reason at all for this. The instructions imply it opens both ways and there is even the little tabs on either side of the gate at the bottom, that you can flick one side down to prevent the gate opening one way or the other - which there is no need for on a gate that only opens one way anyway! The lock system works with a 'cup' like mechanism that when locked, prevents the gate opening. One side of the cup longer that the other, meaning that even when pulled back and 'unlocked' the gate will not open one way. We found this really annoying so cut off and filed the long side of the cup to match the other, shorter side. This was easy enough and looks like it was always meant to be that way - biggest complaint is why isn't it that way already? No reason to have one side longer. Aside from that, reasonable quality gate for a good price.
