Avoid this model/brand. **Q: what physical size harddrives can be used?** A: The hard drive "size" is not the physical size of the drive itself but the diameter of the platter inside the drive. A standard desktop HDD is 5.75" x 4" but has a 3.5" platter inside. Hence the name 3.5" drive even though it is physically much bigger. A notebook HDD measures 4" x 2.75" and referred to as a 2.5" drive. **Q: If single drive is installed initially, then 2nd drive is added later. does raid 1 get configured? or does both drive need to be installed together?** A: I installed one drive initially, and then added a second drive later.
