This tool should work just fine on 7/16" chipboard and 5/8 in plywood. On the 5/8" plywood it might have a slightly weaker grip so you may need to fine tune the alignment in some cases. **Q: will this clip into an outlet box after the outlet has been installed?** A: no.this clips into threaded holes in box that that the outlet screws into, you must remove outlet before you can use this unit. do you realize that the jig pictured is for ceiling boxes, which are round or octagonal, I doubt you want to install an outlet into that kind of a box, **Q: Does this cut both single and double gang boxes?** A: no this is for ceiling boxes only, find other kit by same people that will cut gang boxes **Q: I am installing 3/4" knotty pine. I have built 2 homes from the ground up, finished several basements, bathroom re-models and so on. This is a simple and easy to use product. I have used many other methods; measure which takes time and needs practice to get it right the fist cut. Marker or lipstick to mark the back of drywall, here you need to mark up your boxes, set the drywall up, take it down and then cut it and even then you are off because it does not sit flush. This product is as billed; set the one portion in the electrical box, outlet, light whatever, set the drywall into place, set the other portion over the area of the first portion and they magnetically link. While the two portion are linked, you can trace the outline you need to cut and the cut is exact, the drywall stays in place to be hung and after you can take out the portion in the box. Slick, easy to use, saves time and is a great little tool to keep around whether you work with drywall often or just ever so often.
