The holder is larger than I expected from the photos, but exactly as large as described and as large as it needs to be. It is reasonably heavy (nicely heavy for its size, like a baseball) and the hole for the pencil is just over one inch deep, or probably an inch from the lowest point of the top, as the horizontal indentation for laying the pencil flat is maybe 1/4 inch. This means the holder does not tip over from the weight of the pencil at all, even though the actual base is much smaller than the diameter of the crystal. I put a small piece of padding in the bottom of the well to protect the pen tip from bumping against hard crystal. I'd love to find a less fancy-looking version because this is a surprisingly pretty item in my purely functional office, but that also gives it a certain charm.
