The claims about no sharp edges is true. It cuts the lid on the side below the lip. I'd not let kids play with the lid but it's still safe enough to accidentally cut your hand. The cool part is the lid can be replaced on the can, and it acts as a decent cover if you don't use the entire can. It will leak and if you turn it over, the lid will fall off, so don't be silly. It's enough to not need tinfoil, it's adequate to keep the stuff fresh for the day or 2 til you use it all. Just understand it just sits there it not air tight and simply turning the can over it will fall off and spill out. It's not a complaint!! It's just a warning. I like it, it's a handy feature. As the other person answering commented, if you use this left handed you will be turning the handle towards you while if right handed you turn it away from you. But since unlike most can openers which are held clamped by the left hand and cranked by the right hand (making them extremely difficult for lefties to operate) this can opener is self clamping - you hold the can and crank with either hand - so it is at least lefty usable. But, due to your arm NOT having symmetrical musculature, it is always easier to turn a handle AWAY than it is to turn toward yourself. That is all it needs to do ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I'll never go back to the two-handled, plier type of opener. Never. *by J***B on December 14, 2024* I think opening cans is a pain the neck. Between risks of spilling contents, dropping a cut lid into the can, wondering what's on the surface of those lids, fighting cans that are stubborn, wondering why the magnets don't pick up the lid, dealing with slipping cogs that make opening some cans sloppy work and, my favorite, ending up with a lid that has two areas uncut on opposite sides. And the self-opening lids? They're great but even some of those fail. I got this can opener on a lark. I have become a fan of the simple openers that come on a multi-tool. They just work. Failure rates are low. It's a pain, but it works. But I wanted to give this a try. So glad I did. There's a long list of pros and two TINY cons with this can opener, so here goes, starting with the good: - SUPER easy to start cutting open a lid. I actually had removed a lid before I realized I had even made contact. My daughter tried it and said "This thing is awful! Nothing is happening!" I told her to rotate the wheel backwards a half turn. The opener popped off the can and the lid was easily removed, perfectly cut. She looked at me like did when she got her first cell phone. It's almost deceptively simple how you drop it on the can, line it up (and I mean that in the roughest sense... just make sure the ring is in the right place) and start turning. It bites in and cuts. When resistance all but disappears, rotate a half turn backwards. The lid is off. - It's a good, safe cut. The edges are not sharp. The lid has rounded edges and is perfectly smooth. The top of the can has a cut, but it's not generally sharp in the way a lid is from a traditional opener. - The lid stays "stuck" on the can. In other words, it doesn't usually pop off until you put your fingers on it and lift. It also goes back on, meaning you can literally store contents of a half-used can in the actual can with the actual lid in your fridge. - Pretty durable. The plastic material feels strong. There's metal in the right places and it feels like it will last a while with decent care. It's not bombproof like the old Swing-Away openers, but it's solid for a mostly plastic device. - Great price/performance ratio. I have paid more than $10 for can openers I thought were trash on day 1. Cons: - Turning the knob to work your way around the can is SLIGHTLY more resistant than with a traditional plier style opener. There's just a little more resistance. But the knob is strong, large and comfortable. If I were older and arthritic, I might prefer a traditional opener to this one or even an electric can opener. I would say it's about 20 percent harder than a traditional one, which means nothing to most people with average strength in their hands. - Removing the lid is a little weird. You need to grip the can, hold it firm to the counter or surface and use fingers (even fingernails) to remove the lid. If you're holding this against your body in the air and try it, liquid contents will spill. Cleanup will ensue. Curse words may fly. I bought one for my daughter who has a newborn and I am ordering another to put in my travel kit. Get it.
