4th book in the series and still going strong.

I would highly recommend the series. Just finished this book this morning (April 2016).Two things to keep in mind when you are thinking of this series. 1. It was originally written in Russian. 2. It was then translated to English. And it is a testament to the strength of the author and the translator that this series is as good as it is. Rarely are translated books done all that well, usually lazy editor mistakes and obvious incorrect word usage are apparent. Not the case here. The author has a well crafted world, laws of magic that make sense. A good sense of humor and concepts that work. Character development is great.Again, having worked overseas for a number of years in foreign countries, I understand how difficult translating can be. Other than being set (mostly) in Russia, you would never know it was a translation. If you haven't seen the Night Watch and Day Watch movies- read the books first, then the movies. They will make a lot more sense.

Maybe "The Not Quite the Last Watch"

*by J***T on Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2009*

It's January 2009, and I just got my copy through Amazon from a third party vendor, and oh, is it worth getting! While the events of Night Watch, Day Watch, and Twighlight Watch are referred to in this novel, and I wish I had the self-discipline to re-read the prior 3 volumes before tackling this one, I did not.Last Watch really is more of a whodunit or a "who's doing it" than a traditional fantasy format. Investigation of a murder apparently committed by a vampire in Scotland indicates the possiblity of a conspiracy, including and utilizing humans, to attack Others and obtain a magical artifact hidden in the Twilight by the legendary sorcerer Merlin. Anton constantly struggles to mount an effective attack against the conspirators, but difficulty in identifying them and their continual ability to stay a step ahead convinces him their's a traitor in the highest levels of the Day or Night Watches or even the Inquisition. Complicating matters is Anton's contiual wrestling with guilt over some of his prior acts and his foreboding that he has somehow caused this problem.Clues along the way help Anton gradually penetrate the confusion and identify the perpetrators, but that's a long way from anticipating their next moves and stopping them. There is plenty of suspense and action in this "nominal conclusion" to Anton's story. The story ends with room for a sequel, so as a fan, I can only hope.

Write another follow-on book that's not as good as the pervious one - it's better

How can you top a series? Write another follow-on book that's not as good as the pervious one - it's better! Each of Lukyanenko's books grows the plot, strengthens the characters, and adds depth and vibrancy to the series. I hope he hasn't finished writing the series, I could do another 5 books here and not regret reading them!I love the characters, especially Anton, who is easy to identify with - his struggles with what is good and what is evil are fascinating and I ask myself the same questions. I know, I know, it's not meant to be a philosophy session, but boy these books not only entertain, they make you think about life and values.I consider these books so good that I willingly give them as gifts to close friends. I don't do that often! Once you read them, you will want to do the same, you just have to sure them!
