Review: Way better than they have any business being - I picked up a vintage pair of MTX AAL 124s from St Vinnie's a while back. I was super suprised by how good they sounded with just some basic modifications. While trying to figure out the specs on the 124s I discovered that MTX was still in business building mostly car audio equipment, and to a much lesser extent home audio speakers. I took a gamble on these MONITOR5i kind of hoping they were built similarlly to my much larger AAL 124s. And wouldn't you now it...Pretty much the same box construction. Out of the box, these speakers sound good. But add $10 worth of Bonded Dacron dampening to the inside of the box (mind you keep that bass reflex port clear!) and they sound even better. Replace the janky input clips with $7 worth of 5 way binding posts (you can get a set of two, 49mm diameter here on desertcart), and we're really talking. Two simple teaks, and these speakers sound a perform as well as a pair 2-3x their price. I have them paired up with a AIYIMA T9, and they sound great!

Ultra cheap price with what one should experience as being a very expensive "type" premium performance. These are definitely top performing compact bookshelf speakers and should be capable of favorable audio comparison to similar sized bookshelf speakers costing up to 6 times more. One of my top 10 all time bargain audio equipment purchases. Excited to be a new proud owner.

We all want great sound but let's face it we also want a good value. I use these for rear surrounds on a 5.1 setup including a Denon receiver, JBL HLS center,JBL 3 way towers and a Polk sub. I am very happy with my purchase I can hear a Lot more detail with these compared to my old surrounds. They have good bass and crisp highs. You could compose a decent surround system using 4 of these with a decent sub and a Good center. I think that they are a good value and I would highly recommend them to a friend.
