My girlfriend and I have it lying down horizontally with another set of cubes stacked on top of it. Works great to organize gaming consoles and keeps a tv steady **Q: Can I put another 3 shelf on top of the first one** A: I wouldn't recommend it. The back is cardboard so it is not really able to be secured to the wall.... it is not a very sturdy item. **Q: Could you flip this so it was actually standing on the base? That way you could change which side had 3 shelves & which had 4?** A: Absolutely. You can have any of the four sides be the base.We put it on it's side with the four cubes on the bottom. Three mods could be made to attain 5 stars; a) The screws could be counter sunk into the unit so as not to scratch other furniture if placing the unit flush to or on top of other surfaces. b) The instructions could be clearer for non-white units so it is clear which side the colour needs to be (up/down for white/colour). I had a green unit and reverted to looking at the Amazon pictures for help as the instructions are in black and white. c) One of the 2 units I ordered didn't have enough white stickers to cover the screw heads. As mentioned in a), the screws would be better counter sunk and plastic screw head finishers supplied for a more quality finish.
