The pleasing tone was more noticeable for the first 5 seconds then slowly faded. It lasted in total for about 12 seconds. The pictures really don't do it justice. It's a soft gold color of metal that sits on a black pillow with gold trim. It's light and can be transported anywhere. If you want to take it with you, it'll fit in a purse or suitcase with ease. Or just save the small box that it came with and reuse it. It was very well packaged with a fitted non-styrofoam material that will keep it's form for quite a while. It came with instructions on how to use the Singing Bowl, a website for free download of meditation songs, and place where you can leave questions or feedback. The dimpled bowl has a beautiful much quieter hum due to the shiny finish. Some people prefer that. The smooth 3" bowls are the ones that are are going to be easiest to play and generally louder than the 2.5" or 5". (Note the 5-inch is under a separate listing as it is black and has gold mantra lettering on the bowl.) The 2.5" is preferred by some collectors because it is considered the smallest singing bowl made. It produces a higher pitched sound when played, and can also get louder because of its smooth finish. The 5-inch bowl has a very nice low hum that can be created with a little practice. All of the singing bowls will produce the best sound when resting on the cushion, as touching it in any other way will inhibit the vibrations. **Q: What note does this singing bowl play?** A: Hello,Thank you very much for writing!
