There is no plastic that touches the water as it is boiling. The lid opens completely so you can look directly into the bottom of the kettle with ease. The bottom is cool to the touch even with a full kettle of boiled water. My only observation is that the handle does get hot nearest the lid but the bottom half does not get warm at all. Do not touch the stainless steel side when it is full because it is very hot. I am pleased with this purchase would recommend it to anyone that has a need for hot water in a hurry.
