The mechanism is entirely metal as is the base and the top. The rest is tough plastic. Operating the turn mechanism is satisfying. The machine is big enough to be way more than some tchochke. The significant flaw is that it cannot accept newly-minted quarters. The edges on newer quarters are finer than on older ones and (I'm guessing this is why) they get caught in the coin slot and they are sometimes very stuck. If anybody has a solution I'd love to hear it as this would be an otherwise fantastic product if not for this flaw... I would recommend this for personal use or as a gift.
