One grows in the east on oak. Laetiporus sulphureus is the eastern US strain and the strain that grows around the world. Two different strains of laetiporus grow on the west coast. One grows on conifers, primarily fir trees. I'm pretty sure it is called laetiporus coniferous. The other grows on hardwoods and eucalyptus. All three can be eaten. The distress is usually caused by bacteria. You should only eat the outer few inches and wash it well. If it is discolored or spongy, it should be discarded. Cook it well. It can then be frozen. It readily absorbs flavors like BBQ sauce or stir fry. Taste a small piece to see if you have an allergy such as a numb lip. I love them and the ones I eat grow on fir but they are the western hardwood strain. The fir tree strain grows from Santa Cruz county northward. **Q: How long do these stay viable or how should they be stored?** A: I bought some a week ago and left them in the bag and now they are moldy so I am not sure how to store these plugs without putting them into a dead log.
