Review: Great Heat Protection for BBQ and Chimney Starter Use - I bought these RAPICCA 16-inch fireplace gloves to use with my Weber barbecue, mainly for handling the chimney starter, hot coals, and charcoal baskets, and I have been really impressed with them so far. The first thing I noticed was the heavy-duty feel of the thick cowhide leather and the rugged stitching. They feel like proper protective gloves rather than thin BBQ mitts. The extra-long length is a big plus, as it gives me much more peace of mind by protecting my wrists and forearms from stray sparks, ash, and radiant heat. I used them while getting the coals ready in my Weber Rapidfire chimney starter and then tipping and distributing the hot coals into the Char-Baskets while cooking a beer can chicken. They did a great job of blocking the heat from the flames and coals, and I had no problem gripping my barbecue tools while wearing them. They are thick gloves, so you do lose a bit of fine finger dexterity, but for barbecue, fire pit, fireplace, or chimney starter use, I would much rather have the extra protection. One word of caution: I would not treat these as magic gloves for holding glowing hot metal, hot ash, or open flames for long periods. They are excellent for quick adjustments, moving hot barbecue parts, handling logs, or dealing with the chimney starter, but prolonged direct heat will eventually come through. Used sensibly, though, they are excellent gloves and exactly what I wanted for safer outdoor cooking.
