At first the voices and personalities did not mesh well with my own imagination's inner voice but I got used to them . Still, reading lets me imagine things the way I prefer them, so I still enjoy a good read.One review comparing Edding's work to a pastiche of Tolkien revealed to me how some people read one work - often whatever is most common and whatever it is that everyone else is reading - and unfairly (and inaccurately) compares it to every other book. Eddings tastes more like Lloyd Alexander's Pyrdain (Taran and Garion), Ivanhoe, Robin Hood, and other more humanistic works. With a great deal of imagination and creativity and story telling. His works are a bit male oriented, but the writer is a guy. He does not indulge is men-only stories, though; the ladies are always there with the guys. A relief from the loveless, sexless fantasies of others.People discuss high fantasy and low fantasy - I call Eddings "ordinary people" fantasy. His characters are exaggerated (everyone's characters are) but somewhat flawed and human. Not cloying funny-looking humans (Elves, Dwarves, and What-not) but rather humans who look funny and behave funny. And have their own quirks and unique talents.The magic is limited but can be powerful; occasional romps of combat occur; but this is very much a people story. Personalities.I would not reccommend this (or any book) to Dungeons & Dragons fans (or any such pencils and paper role-playing game). Except as an escape from the rich immersion of such games. D&D cannot compare to books; nor books to D&D.But for fans of ordinary fantasy fiction this is worth a try. Check out a library book or borrow one before buying.And, no, I am not dn Eddings fanboy fanatic. Some of his works do not interest me. Pronunciation and accents used by performer were not well done.
