They are to dampen vibrations and to protect the mouthpiece from your upper teeth. As for embouchure instructions you need to get them from your teacher, or you can look up embouchure advice in a good instruction book like Frederick Westphal's "Guide to Teaching Woodwinds". **Q: Are these helpful with players with braces?** A: They will not protect your clarinet from your braces (this will be on the backside of your teeth). That said, it will help protect your mouthpiece from teeth that are not straight. I had a cross-bite at one time, one front tooth in front of the bottom teeth, one in back (or much further their back). One tooth was always wearing on my mouthpiece.
