Might machine be defective?** A: I am a Nurse Practitioner & I have very specific instructions for my patients to take their blood pressure. As there can be many variables that can effect every reading. First you want to make sure the batteries are good (new) in the monitor. Then wrap the monitor around your arm, sit still with both feet flat on the floor, no movement or talking for 2-5 minutes then take the blood pressure. I have them try to stake it at the same time of the day for comparison. Slight movements, talking, lying down, standing, agitation, being upset, etc. can all effect blood pressure readings. . Very rarely will you get the exact blood pressure reading in secession, but they should be within 10-15 mm Hg for both systolic(top #) & diastolic(bottom #). I also have my patients bring their blood pressure monitor with then to their appointments to compare readings so I can make sure it is calibrated correctly & inspect it for any defects.
