The clock is very bright but can be dimmed down at night. One problem is the display will randomly go blank however unplugging the clock and plugging it back in does fix it. Very disconcerting when you wake up in the middle of the night and check to see what the time is and the display is blank. The other problem is the alarm is so quiet I cannot hear it. Correction, discovered that when the clock is updating the display will go blank however after the clock is updated the display will come back on. The display is bright with large numbers, so can easily be seen from across the room. It picked up the correct time automatically. You do need to read the instructions to figure out how to set alarm and shut it off. It meets my needs very well. Reading other reviews I knew before hand of the 2 negatives that caused me to give it 4 stars, rather than 5 stars. 1. The controls are on the back, so it takes a couple of times for you to get used to finding the button to shut it off and turn it on. 2. Since it is an atomic clock it updates the time daily in the middle of the night. This clock goes dark, during the 2-10 minute time period it searches for the correct time. It does not lose your settings during this period. The first time you see it you think, the clock stopped working. Then you realize it is just the way it works. However.
