Want to deter squirrels from climbing up wood posts to get up on our deck.** A: They should work vertically. I attach mine using tie-wraps. However, my experience is that they don't work well with squirrels. I use these on my fence to keep the squirrels from getting onto my bird feeders. My squirrels simply walk right on the spikes without any issues. **Q: How long are the spikes and can they be covered with mulch and still deter unwanted animals in flowerbeds?** A: No, I think that these are just for keeping birds off of flat surfaces. I put them on top of the horizontal board of my wood fence.
