One night we had a hard freeze where the temperature dropped to -6 degrees overnight. Daytime the temperature would be above freezing in the 40's up to the 60's. All during this period my barrel remained at the least, half full. It survived the winter with water in it without any leaks or damage. Its because they have 3 non-detachable bars on top of barrel to support screen. I think it also severed as safety for any cats and dogs not easly fall into the barrel. this barrel is higher than most people's arm length so rinse it is properly the only way to clean it. with the screen on it, its hardly any debris going in. I am going to empty it and clean it once a year before the winter. Hope this helps. The other problem for us is that we don't have gutter downspouts, so much of the incoming water will be deflected by this top structure. When they are only about half full, using the bottom hose will be quite slow. A friend gave these to us and we will probably have to cut them, but as was also mentioned, that might somewhat reduce the integrity of the structure. **Q: Is it possible to get a longer piece for connecting two barrels?
