If you don't, it'll rot in a few years. Also, if you don't want to take the chance of little birdlettes dying in a horrible fall, invest in a spring-loaded window rod to place directly beneath it so it doesn't put a lot of stress on the oftentimes unreliable suction cups. Or put it on top of a ledge on your window sill.
