Review: Strong and Fishy. - Fish in a foil packet. Ok, some people like kale. Some people will never like it, and no amount of kale massage can change their opinion. Same with mackerel. My advice is: if you don't like fishy fish, you probably shouldn't get this. Me? I LOVE sardines and mackerel. Nice, oily fish with a strong flavor. I've gotten 3 cases of this product, and have found it to be consistently good. It's not too strong for mackerel - I've had stronger tasting stuff. Also it has fairly big chunks of fish considering the size of the package, not a lot of "crumbs", and no bones. The packet is a nice size for a serving. My cats love the juice/oil. A drawback is that I can't open it without scissors as I have to pull so hard the packet rips suddenly and fishy juice goes everywhere - something to consider if you're taking it in your lunch for work. Or camping in bear country. It would be bad to go hiking in bear territory if you spilled mackerel juice all over your spiffy REI outfit. I'm pretty much happy with the quality and price. It's handy, good for sandwiches. It's good with Greek olives. It's good on a micro-greens salad. I think I read some people complained about where it came from. Are there even cannery facilities in the US anymore? It would be great if this was a product of the USA, but it's not. I choose not to judge it on that. Unless the quality takes a nosedive, I'll continue getting this.
Review: Excellent! Not fishy. My new favorite. - I poured off the extra oil and water from the pouch and made Mackerel salad with Dijon mustard, dill, a little plain kefir/yogurt, lemon juice and some chipotle pepper powder. Delicious, inexpensive, full of high quality protein and super easy to use. Not fishy. BTW, I just called them (11/16/21) to see which mackerel they catch and it's chub mackerel, not King Mackerel, the one with the highest levels of mercury. So it's safer to eat this. After buying this numerous times, I have one request of the company: Pack the fish with less liquid. It's a bit of mess to drain.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is this wild caught or farmed fish? Thank you.**
A: Chicken of the Sea Mackerel products are manufactured using wild caught fish.

**Q: hi can i purchase 1/2 of this quantity just way to much for me, please advise?**
A: It seems to be only by the case.

**Q: From USA or where exactly?**
A: Thailand. But it's (literally) Kosher. Which means it's clean. It tastes fine. And is good for you.

**Q: Still fresh?**
A: It's exactly the same as canned fish. The difference is, that the can is shaped like a flat envelope, so that there is less fluid (water or oil) used in cooking, and the transportation cost is less. It seems that the pieces are also smaller. But "freshness" should be similar to canned. (On the one hand, I think that some canning is actually done on the boats, but probably not for the packets; on the other hand, the nature of the packet ought to preserve it slightly better.)

But, does anybody know, what kind of mackerel, this actually is?

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Buy, Buy, Buy
*by A***Y on March 24, 2016*

First off, it's good tasting mackerel. It is in smaller pieces than most mackerel fillest, but I usually spread it on a piece of toasted buttered pilot bread, so that's an advantage. Another review complained it was hard to separate the oil from the fish. I put the packet contents on a plate and tipped it a bit, the oil, what little there was, ran down and was easy to blot off with a paper towel. One of the drawbacks to this product is that there isn't much oil, I like the idea of having some oil to use in an improvised lamp should the need arise. I prefer another brand of canned fillets in Olive oil, but they are $4/4.05 oz and a net drained weight of 80 grams. The Chicken of the Sea nets a drained 70 grams for less than $1.25. Further, COS mackerel has 19 grams of protein compared to 16 of the more expensive brand. The packets have the advantage of being lighter and a more concentrated source of nutrition. The cans have the advantage of providing more oil and a container which with a scrap of cloth can be used for an emergency lamp. The COS pouches have a "best by" date of August 2018, and it is March of 2016, so there's a great shelf life. I will be buying these again, and very happily so.
