It chooses which power option is most efficient. It will run on AC, DC, has it's own rechargeable batteries and you can also use and addition D-cell batteries. That is something that is now made too clear when you are shopping for them. It has internal batteries and you can add D batterries, so you have the option of 4 power sources. The fan motor is also improved to run on less power...giving you longer run time. It has a USB port also. It is a good fan. I'd shop around, I paid more for ours, but I see you can get them under $45 now. **Q: Is it 110 or 220 volt** A: The charger indicates an input of 110-240V. The two prongs appear to be for 110 standard wall outlet. I set it on battery mode about once a week. Every now and then it will speed up and then slow down like the electric is bad but it does it in battery mode also. No real problem. I recommend it and now have 3. I will not buy a box fan anymore. I live @ 7000 feet and only need a swamp cooler and fans. I also use the USB charger port quite a bit. Charger status light comes on a lot but doesn't seem to bother it. Switch is pretty stiff on the new one but I think it will break in. Internal battery lasts for hours. It's pretty quiet and worth the money.
