The color and pattern is pretty unisex (and adorable) and it came with the best little sun hat made out of the same swimsuit material as the rashguard. She wore it around outside (but not at the beach). I would say it gave her good sun coverage except for the bottom of her legs - the suit seemed to be cropped length. It doesn't breathe especially well - it is thin bathing suit material. She was getting very red in the face wearing it and was sweaty when we came inside but I'm not sure any suit (except no suit at all) would have kept her cooler.
