Review: Picky Familiar's Favourite! - You know how it goes: You find your feline friend his (mine's a rescue boy named Puddin' Pi, previously "Scratches", which was *clearly* incorrect, so I'll be using the male gender, even though he's fixed) favourite tinned food, stock up and then his nose is turned up. Well, in times like these, when you're lucky to find any tinned food, let alone the brand he likes, or the Holy Grail of type and even particular flavour, you do the very thing you swear you would never do, and empty the shelves of said product. I didn't! In fact, I offered some to my upstairs neighbours when Pi was having a change of heart toward this (TBH) true love of his. It was random and lasted about three days. Hysterical. The boy came to me at four years old and it took him almost a year to trust me enough to sit on me, and months before he would let me touch him for more than a few seconds. So, he is slow with his affections and can still be a tad skittish, or has a sense of humour. Apparently, the upstairs cats will now eat nothing but this. Ooops! Although I dislike plastic, I have bought other FF products that come in such containers, as canned foods have become harder to find locally, for at least a year. I tried giving these to Pi, but his heart is with the Savory Centers. Pi doesn't mind a different type for a palate cleanse now and then, or tolerates it. I have a bowl of high quality dry food down at all times, and then he likes me to give him small amounts of the wet food at a time. It's a bit like having water from a tap, rather than a bowl, I suppose. It took me a while to figure out what worked for him, and I'd much rather serve him amuse bouche amounts throughout the day, than plop down the whole tin/plastic container and then have to deal with the slowly crisping results left behind. I'm on an extremely limited income, and before I understood Pi's preferred servings, it was hard to watch my non disposable income turn into inedible cat food rocks. Did I mention I'm a vegetarian, and that my beloved dog died, so nobody else would be eating up petrified cat food? You *know* Pi isn't even worth mentioning here! (And yet, here I am)! Anyway, I have a couple of cases of "other" food in my pantry, in case the supply chains get completely shut down. I open one now and then, and Pi obliges, by eating sub par (in his far more developed palate than mine) food for a day. Or, at least pushing each wee serving around his plate with his tongue and giving it a polite nibble, before shaking a rear leg at it and then dashing off to bop at a toy mouse. But, basically, what makes him actually vocalise his happiness, is when I crack open a tin of Savory Centers, and slice out a third for his dining pleasure. He pops up on his rear legs as I lean down with his plate, and mews the sweetest little sound, that fills me with joy. Because our companion animals bring us so much pleasure in this seriously confusing and too often dark and depressing world, it's fantastic to have something we can rely on, if only for a while, that we know makes them happy. So, I'd say you should buy some for your familiar, but just don't empty the shelves! Not all of us have the money to do that, and more important, it's really not fair to do that, as it's creating a shortage that may not even exist, and then we have price gouging. Buy a case, or a few tins, and hey, if your familiar doesn't like it, then donate to a shelter, or to needy neighbours like mine...they are teachers, need I say more? Fancy Feast makes great products, so I don't need to say anything about that, right? My late cat, Jammy Dodger, loved a completely different line of their food, but Pi is a gravy boy, so, between the lava cake type center and the pate style; this is his favourite food. For now!

**Q: Why the price hike? Thus was approx $13 for 24 just 2 weeks ago. Walmart sells @ 54 cents a can. Price gouging?**
A: It would seem that since online shopping is beginning to take precedence over brick and mortar shopping (especially due to the pandemic), Amazon and other long time online stores are hiking their prices, because they can. 

Brick and mortar stores have lost a lot of ground, with long existing, well known stores going bankrupt and disappearing since the beginning of this century.  Sear's and K-Mart are a good example. Sears has been around since the 19th century, operating extensively via mail order (I have many digital copies of their early catalogs, and they're huge!).  Unfortunately, Walmart was one of 2 nails in their coffin.  

The first nail in traditional retail was a mix between the white exodus to the suburbs and the coming of indoor malls.  When they began to gain popularity their spread during the 70s, 80s and 90s, snuffed out a lot of local and regional retailers.  Then along came Walmart.  

Walmart is largely responsible for the last round of annihilation of locally owned stores, as well as their finishing off what was left of many medium and small sized cities downtowns.   Along came the internet, which by the mid to late 90s had only just become an alternative and possible means for smaller and specialty retailers to regain some ground they had lost previously. That is, until Amazon. 

Amazon began as an online bookseller and were largely responsible for finishing off privately owned local book stores. Amazon was so successful at this that even well-known national booksellers began to suffer. Walden's, B.Dalton's, Borders, and many more, eventually couldn't compete and either downsized greatly or died a slow death.   If you were around during those years, there were a lot of people desperately trying to save those stores.  Typically, this effort was for the smaller, locally owned bookstores, but there were some who also did the same for the large corporate sellers.  Something that seems a bit odd and a text book example of misplaced loyalties.  

As for the local booksellers, they were more than just stores selling books.  They were local venues for book lovers or anyone to spend time talking with others about books, and the owners were always very knowledgeable themselves.   There was also a vested interested in saving those stores (as was the same with almost any locally owned establishment) as the money spent in them not only largely remained within the communities, it multiplied itself.  While on the other side, money spent in franchises or stores whose base was elsewhere, sucked the bulk of the dollars spent within them outside the area and back to their Cities and States of origin.  This is one case where centralized retail (for that is in one sense what it is), does more damage to the communities they move into than most either know about or are willing to admit.  

Walmart, being amongst the worst of its kind, finished off what the indoor shopping malls and shopping centers had begun before it.  At one point, Walmart's goal was to not have any Walmart further than five miles from another Walmart.   Then the internet blossomed, along with Amazon.

By the late 90s and early 00s, Amazon began diversifying, moving from one element of retail to another, until today their reach is well beyond originally selling books.  Unfortunately, as convenient as Amazon may appear, some of it is illusion by utilizing a third party seller system giving the impression that it carries far more than it really does.  

Don't forget the damage deregulating the banking and financing system caused during the first years of the 00s. That led to the economic implosion worldwide, which many have never really recovered from. While many lost homes, jobs, etc., it was also the beginning of the shuttering of what was once considered steady and stable franchises, big box stores, and indoor shopping malls. Now that we're transitioning to online shopping, brick and mortar stores are suffering greatly.

**Q: difference between classic and grilled**
A: If you are in the cat food aisle at Walmart, everyone is shopping for Classic pate because it’s what their cats love.

**Q: Why do they put cows milk in food for cats when cats generally are lactose intolerant?**
A: It does NOT cause loose stools in my cats, in fact I switched from a food without milk that actually did cause loose stools. Not every food & protein will work with every cat. I REALLY wish Purina would not put fish in almost every flavor. There are scientifically proven negative consequences to feeding fish except as treat or special meal. Mercury, metals, disrupting vitamin E absorption & addiction. Cats absolutely love the flavor & when fed often will start to refuse other healthy proteins. However I do sometimes add a tsp or 2 of fat free lactose free milk to my cats food. It’s not needed but a special treat with calcium. Milk adds carbs which cats have no nutritional requirement for so also watch the carb content in the food do you feed. If the food has ANy plant material from grain to potatoes to pumpkin it will add carbs & carbs in cats = obese or diabetic cats. Watch the fish & carbs & you can easy measure carbs on dry matter basis using one of many cat food carb calculators available just google. Healthy cats shouldn’t have more than 10% carbs on a dry matter basis and diabetic cats should never ever have more than 5% carbs on a dry matter basis. Surprisingly, all of the new fancy face naturals are low in carbs and acceptable except they all pretty much have fish. Read those labels! It’s not hard to feed species appropriate food…even on budget. 😀

**Q: are all of the gravy flavors chicken or are they mixed?**

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The only food my cat will eat

My cat is 20 years old and I've been experimenting with different wet foods because the moisture content is good for her kidneys. I leave dry food out but she prefers the wet. It's a win win. Once I figured out she liked pate more than chunky foods, I tried several kinds. Blue Buffalo makes a senior pate that she liked okay, but she wouldn't eat the whole tin, even the small ones, and it would go bad so I'd be wasting so much. Then I tried fancy feast perfect portions. She went back to eating her dry food lol. Then I found that her favorite treats, temptations, made a wet food! She guess bezerk for those treats so I ordered a case of the pate. She loved it. Unfortunately, it's super hard to find them in stock anywhere! So one week, in a pinch, I ordered a case of this stuff hoping that the extra gravy would be enough to at least keep her eating until the temptations food came back in stock. To my delight, she ate the entire can. Then the next one. And the next one. When I finally presented her with the temptations pate again, she looked at me with such treachery in her eyes that I vowed to never change her food again lol. She eats more now, she's gained some weight back, her fur looks nourished, thick, and clean. Her poops are adorable. She drinks water without complaint and her kidneys are happy I'm sure. I lost a cat to kidney disease after years of having to administer SubQ fluids weekly. My vet was amazed by my kitty's improved kidney function and I really think it's this food. The water content is so high and she loves the taste. The cans are the perfect size and she looks 5 years younger since switching to this stuff! Thank you Purina savory centers!
