The textured tray makes it easier to ensure that you get a nice firm set when you apply glue. There is some dirt or grease or something on the inside of the trays but that is easily removed with an alcohol swab. I always clean the tray with alcohol anyway so this made no difference to me. One piece of glass cabochon was unusable as it had a white spot that seemed to be embedded into the glass. When using for jewelry they do not disappear and you can't sell them or give them as a present.
