The output of this device isn't anywhere near line level, so while it does amplify, the level of amplification isn't terribly large. It is nice to be able to place a mic away from the phone it is attached to though and give it a bump in level if you recording something quiet, although there seems to be some hiss in the chain, it could be this thing. The headphone out seems to be wired direct to phone's audio output.
