Review: GREAT way to enhance reloading; works by gravity -- automatic feeder accessory not needed! - The Hornady Lock n' Load AP Bullet Feeder Die works GREAT for reloading .38 spl / .357 mag rounds. Instead of using this with the (expensive) automatic feeder tray, I simply use a ~2' length of PVC tubing with an inner diameter of 3/8" that holds about 30 bullets and feeds them by gravity alone into the top of the die. To mount it, I made a wooden block that is bored on the bottom to fit over the top of this die and bored on the top to hold the PVC tube properly centered over the die. Then I drilled 1/4" holes in the side of the tubing so that I could visually monitor the number of rounds in the tube (kind of like "witness" holes in the side of a pistol magazine). Every 25 rounds or so, I pause to top off the tube again and go back to reloading. It works great, takes up much less space than the automatic feeder unit would, and also stows easily when I switch over to load a different caliber. If you don't want to rig up a tube feeder, you could still use this die by itself. With the 125gr Target HP bullets I'm currently using, I noticed that at least 10 bullets will fit inside the die itself and feed by gravity (without additional tubing). Whether by luck or by skill, I found this die extremely easy to set up. From my first try after the initial adjustment (~3 minutes), it has reliably fed a bullet into each expanded case. (So far, I've run 150 cases through this die and not once has it failed to feed a bullet properly.) Note that you MUST flair/expand the top of each case to at least 0.355" for this die to work. If you feed an unflaired case up into this die, the bullet will not drop down and feed into the case as desired. I'm using the expander that came with my Hornady .38/.357 die set; however, this die INCLUDED a "powder through expander" that should fit the Hornady Powder Drop station and should reliably and consistently flair the case tops to 0.358" if you prefer to use that instead of a dedicated expander die. (I didn't actually use it, but I did hand press it into the top of a case to confirm that it does yield a 0.358" expansion, as measured by digital calipers.
Review: Works well for 9mm plated - At first I hated this thing it wouldn't feed plated bullets. I set it on a shelf and thought about returning it. After some research I took matters into my own hands and pulled out the Dremel and a polishing stone on collet A. (Go slow and check your progress) After getting reliable feeding I had to polish using felt polishing tips and mothers mag and aluminum polish. This was needed because the collet was scratching the cases. Now the die works flawlessly. Maybe once in every 200 rounds it won't feed. I think this has a lot to do with the Hornady PTX powder insert belling the case. The directions tell you how much the case should be belled if you ensure you've adjusted to that diameter you shouldn't have any problems. Works well with the bullet feed tubes. Every hundred rounds I refill primers, powder if needed and bullet tubes. Clean off the press and make sure everything is still tight. I truly think the press is capable of 5-600rph with this die.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Will this work with bayou coated bullets ?**
A: As long as the bullets are sized the the correct width at the base, use harder poured lead type coated bullets only. BTH 20-22 would be best.

**Q: So, is it possible to install this and hand stack 8 or 9 bullets in it without needing to buy the bullet feeder?**
A: yes! an even better idea is to buy thin walled plastic aquarium tubing you can stack about 50 bullets in each tube and replace tubes preloaded with bullets quickly. http://www.petmountain.com/product/aquarium-water-tubing/11442-504991/lees-thinwall-rigid-tubing-clear.html#

**Q: does this come with the powder though expander as in the picture?**
A: It does I had another brand of powder through expander that wasn't caliber specific that didn't work with this so use the one that comes with the die

**Q: What one dose .223 ?**
A: You have to have the Hornady rifle bullet feeder assembly. It will come with the .223 feeder/seater combo die. As the name implies the die will both feed bullets into the case as well as seat and taper crimp the bullet in place. Unfortunately they come at a hefty price tag last I check around $350 for the setup

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ it works great but here is the deal
*by D***S on February 18, 2016*

Ok, it works great but here is the deal, you really just need to stick with full metal jacket bullets like it says to do. It says not use with lead bullets, I was using plated bullets from Berry's, a notch up from lead bullets and wound up getting bullets stuck in the "A" collet as a result the "A" collet broke. The plating on the bullet came off inside the collet and caused problems. Of course Hornady replaced the collet free and with no problems, the Tech followed up with an email a few days later to discuss the issue and we determined the bullets need to have closer tolerances. Since then I have started using better quality jacketed bullets and have not have any issues at all. This is a great product!
