It depends on what "really thick" means. The cutting blades are 1/16th of an inch apart when open. Even if your toenail is thinner than that at any point, it may not go into the opening if it's arched, higher in the middle than on the sides. The toenail on my "big" toe won't go between the blades because of that "arch" in nail and so I start from the side and cut my way across the nail with a series of snips. That seems to work OK, but it can be awkward, particularly with some limitations on bending my (replaced) knees far enough to reach the toes and beyond. It helps if I do it right after showering so the nails are softer and more pliable. I'd bought the SEKI edge specifically because it was described as a heavy-duty toenail cutter. But your caution is appropriate, this one doesn't open as far as I'd like... not as far as some other, cheaper ones of had. The problem with the cheaper ones, though, is that the cut wasn't very clean, and sometimes couldn't cut all the way through the nail. **Q: Can this be autoaclaved?** A: There is a small seki label on it that appears to be plastic. It would probably fall off or melt with heat. Otherwise everything else is stainless. **Q: Does this work for fingernails too? THANK YOU EVERYONE!** A: I personally use toe nail clippers for both toes and finger nails. In my opinion, most toenail clippers can cut both type of nails. I don't see major science behind them to justify using separate nail clippers.
