Not are needed or useful. It is Chaga chunks. Chaga is fungi (mushroom that grows on trees in the upper part of the northern hemisphere). It is woodlike and needs no preservatives or additives. This are obviously chunks of Chaga, which cannot be grown in cultivation. It is harvested from the wild and broken into chunks and packaged. It looks, smells and tastes just like the Chaga I find. It is easy to find in the right places (cold Places). When I am not there, I have ordered this and been pleased. **Q: Is it grown on birch trees?** A: Most likely it would come from a birch tree since Chaga is almost exclusively grown on birch trees. It can come from a few other trees though. The pkg. does not say from which tree the Chaga is from. Only that it is 100% wildcrafted.
