## Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From Lauren Graham, the beloved star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood, comes a witty, charming, and hilariously relatable debut novel about a struggling young actress trying to get ahead―and keep it together―in New York City. It’s January 1995, and Franny Banks has just six months left of the three-year deadline she set for herself when she came to New York, dreaming of Broadway and doing “important” work. But all she has to show for her efforts so far is a part in an ad for ugly Christmas sweaters, and a gig waiting tables at a comedy club. Her roommates―her best friend Jane, and Dan, an aspiring sci-fi writer―are supportive, yet Franny knows a two-person fan club doesn’t exactly count as success. Everyone tells her she needs a backup plan, and though she can almost picture moving back home and settling down with her perfectly nice ex-boyfriend, she’s not ready to give up on her goal of having a career like her idols Diane Keaton and Meryl Streep. Not just yet. But while she dreams of filling their shoes, in the meantime, she’d happily settle for a speaking part in almost anything—and finding a hair product combination that works. Everything is riding on the upcoming showcase for her acting class, where she’ll finally have a chance to perform for people who could actually hire her. And she can’t let herself be distracted by James Franklin, a notorious flirt and the most successful actor in her class, even though he’s suddenly started paying attention. Meanwhile, her bank account is rapidly dwindling, her father wants her to come home, and her agent doesn’t return her calls. But for some reason, she keeps believing that she just might get what she came for. Someday, Someday, Maybe is a story about hopes and dreams, being young in a city, and wanting something deeply, madly, desperately. It’s about finding love, finding yourself, and perhaps most difficult of all in New York City, finding an acting job.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Wonderful, Engaging Character
*by on Reviewed in the United States May 13, 2013*

I adore Lauren Graham. In “Parenthood” for sure, but most especially as Lorelai Gilmore in “Gilmore Girls”. My binge watching of that show is one of the reason I drink so much coffee!!!So when I saw that this incredible actress had written a book, I HAD to get it. But as I opened it, I was a bit nervous. Sometimes when artists switch mediums…their fans end up being disappointed…and I so did not want that.But. The character she creates in “Someday, Someday Maybe” – Franny – is no disappointment. She is warm, funny, insecure, fierce, talented…and incredibly human. Her story is one that has been told many times before – a young woman pursues her dream to become an actress in New York, has romantic and career ups and downs….but Franny is a new, fresh voice and makes this book a pleasure to read. She is funny without being a hapless goofball (THAT character has been done to death). She is insecure about some things in her life, but will stand up for herself when it really matters. She has been hurt deeply in her life, and she is flawed, but is not a train wreck.“So I imagined it wasn’t happening to me. I imagined it was happening to someone else. I’m not sure if that had anything to do with me becoming an actor, but that’s the first time I remember realizing that it was easier to think about what I’d so in someone else’s shoes than mine, and that pretending was a way to feel better. Almost.”Franny is a character I was really rooting for. She makes mistakes but not stupid ones that make me yell at my book. The struggles she goes through make her very relatable and sympathetic.“It’s just past three, but already the train is filling up with shopper and commuters leaving work early, and there’s no place to sit. I grasp onto the nearby silver pole, steadying myself as the train lurches along, my hand slipping on the smooth surface, vying for a safe position along with half a dozen other hands. Today, everything about New York leaves me feeling like I’m competing for space, and just barely hanging on.”One of the best parts of the book (and this is going to come out wrong) – was the end. Instead of tying things up in a nice, neat happy ending package, Graham gives the reader a vision of where Franny’s life will take her – but there are still unanswered questions – which is great.I ended up loving this book and this character and hope that Lauren Graham will continue to act and write. Her talent seems to have no boundaries.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Witty and entertaining like Lauren Graham
*by on Reviewed in the United States April 19, 2014*

I give a thumbs up to the quality of Lauren Graham's writing, which, by the way, is eloquent and easy to read, and the characters, especially Franny, who is in possession of a comically realistic mentality and easily distracted trains of thought. However, the whole plot is plain and has a fair amount of cliches, which funnily enough, are mentioned by Franny herself, e.g. when she complains why the heroine always has "a sassy best friend who's a brunette", and in the story, she does have "a sassy best friend who's a brunette". This mirrors people's real lives, when they live moments and experience hardships, that, if put into a book or movie, would most likely be deemed as cliches. At the end of the day, Lauren Graham projects her witty sense of humour and down-to-earth personality on to Franny Banks, so if you appreciate her as an actor and a person, you'll enjoy reading the book, even if you're not into show business.

### ⭐⭐⭐ Lorelai Gilmore, Is That You? A Solid Celebrity Novel
*by on Reviewed in the United States June 26, 2013*

With Someday, Someday Maybe my expectations were realistic. I've had some TERRIBLE experiences reading books written by celebrities (Tyra Banks Modelland comes to mind), but Someday, Someday Maybe seemed fun and light and so like Lorelai Gilmore from Gilmore Girls. Total win, right?Yes...sort of.First, fun things about this book (you know I love a good list):-It's set in 1995 in New York City-It involves Filofaxes-Velvet scrunchies and pay phones were used-There's a lovable dork love interest (<--my fave)-There are life deadlines and backup relationships-Gotta love the sassy best friendThe best part of this story is the journey Franny takes. She's a struggling actress in NYC. She's taking acting classes and trying to book paying jobs. Franny's given herself three years to get a serious gig...or else she's giving up acting and getting a "real" job instead. The book starts with Franny only having six months left to get a big-ish role and have validation about her life and career. With my own recent career leap, I could absolutely relate with Franny's dilemma. Because even in books reality has to collide with dreams. Rent and bills have to be paid.I loved Franny's struggle because it felt real and made me wonder how much of Someday, Someday Maybe is a personal memoir for Lauren Graham. Especially with the book being set in the 90s and being about acting. Some may feel like that could take them out of the story, but for me it only added credibility and authenticity to it.I loved Franny's voice in the story. It's self-deprecating, unsure and super witty, a la Lorelai (and probably Graham herself). Overall, the dialogue of the book was great. It was fun and definitely banter-ish.The main issues with Someday, Someday Maybe is the pacing and overall storytelling. There were definitely some slow moments and sort of self-processing moments that dragged on a bit. What really carried most of the story was Franny's self-development and relationship with a moody, successful actor. Although most of the plot was fairly predictable, I still enjoyed the journey.OVERALL:For a typical fiction novel, I think Someday, Someday Maybe was just OK. Solid but not the best book EVER. For a celebrity novel, it was waaaaay better than I expected. Someday, Someday Maybe is a great fun summe read.
