He had been playing sax for two years and was advanced past the beginner stage. This year he was trying out for a competitive Jazz Band and they suggested he could improve his tone and playability with this mouthpiece. He tried once and never looked back...he loved the feel and sound and has used this mouthpiece ever since. As a parent I was a little shocked by the price but it was competitive with other mouthpieces and I know instruments are expensive....The Selmer S-80 C got great reviews so we felt comfortable making the purchase and it didn't disappoint. Fast forward six months later and he is still loving this mouthpiece and made both the competitive jazz band and top concert band at his middle school. In our experience, the Rovner 1RL (Dark) suits many playing styles and is both durable and affordable. There are many other options, though. **Q: I just bought a Selmer Super Action 80 Series 3 alto sax & the outside diameter of the neck measures roughly 5/8"'s. Will this mouthpiece fit it?** A: My son has an alto sax. (not sure of the specifics as it's currently not here at home) I was able to measure the outside diameter of the original mouthpiece that came w/the sax - It's about 7/8".
