As far as beginner books go, this is probably the best I've found. It's very clear and concise and gives tons of simple examples you can code just to get the practice working with different data elements and structures. It won't turn you into an expert programmer by any means but if you work all the way though it then you won't be completely lost when you start trying to learn more in depth programming.
