Good for 1965, bad for 2020

This one is a standard "I'm not interested in Nazi history, I'm just interested in German military history" book. We saw them before. It's not so bad, really. Author's language is not completely awful, the story itself told is interesting and overlooked part of WWII. You'd get new information from this book. I do not consider this book to be a net loss.But. Do we REALLY need another translation and compilation of German reports and works from 1944-45 and 50s-60s? The book site 3 Russian books in bibliography (one is Rokossovski's memoir) and the author knows about Russian archives. That's all. And that sucks. It's 2020. You can get the numbers of divisions which attacked the Nazis. You can get their strength and their losses. Nothing is done - Soviet (author is not OK with Nazis calling their enemies Russians, it tells a lot) losses are straight from German reports. It's like reading Soviet or neo-Soviet histories, where Heer was wiped out by late 1941 and all German men were killed by 1943. If you have problem with Russian language - there're lots of websites where you can hire your own translator/compilator for single-digit $/hr rates.Second. You're writiting about SS. You're writing about Warsaw uprising. But, really, if we read the book - these guys are "just soldiers". Really. There were lots of atrocities by IV SS Panzer Corps units, nothing is written about that.Third. Maps. That's everybody's (well, nearly everybody's) fault. But - that's 2020. Why do I have to use Google Maps to find the places where the fighting is going on.Fourth. Tables. None of them. Why not add information about organization and strenght (and losses) of units in readable format?

From the German point of view...

The overwhelming majority of books written on the Russo-German war, 1941-1945, whether written by German, English or American authors have an unmistakable slant towards the German side. Probably this is due to the shared Anglo-Saxon heritage of these countries. But what one must always remember, the Germans, almost to a man, were a beastly lot. Starting from Adolf Hitler and working downwards thru the ranks they have proved to be inveterate liars. As the losers the German side is constantly looking for excuses. Not being able to blame the Jews for this particular disaster they find their solace in losing to overwhelming numbers of Russians. Never mind that they always inflate the numbers of Russians opposing them, or overlook the fact that by the end of 1941 the Russians were outnumbered by Germans in the final battle for Moscow. The Germans also continually point out that by 1943 they were having to scrape the bottom of the barrel to find 'unfit' replacements. They never refer to the fact that the Russians had lost over 6 million men in the first year of the war and were already scraping the barrel in 1942. The descriptions of the Totenkopf and Wiking divisions are thorough and well detailed. Just wish there was a description of the opposing Red Army detachments and the their states of fitness.

    An absolute must read

This book is the best book on ?World War Two I have read this year. The author, Douglas Nash, has produced a book with the passages easy to read and captivating. I really like the way he starts the story by beginning with "what is in a Panzer Corps" and continues it with the narrative of the IV SS Panzer Corps in action. My only regret with this book is that I finished it! Nash as a style of writing that flows and is a real pleasure to read, he has become my new favorite author. I find it hard to wait for his other books i ordered to arrive! Read this book, you will not be disappointed!
