Review: Best Quality Discs, cautionary tale on other "Verbatim" option - I've used the Verbatim BD-R 50GB discs frequently for a couple years. They are quite reliable. There is an alternative “Verbatim” 50GB BD-R disc sourced from Japan. It's an all-white, printable disc that you will find on desertcart and other sites. They are temptingly priced at about half the cost of the Verbatim discs you see on this page. I bought a spindle of 100 discs on the bay and many were defective. After translating comments from Asian posters at desertcart, I see others found the same visually obvious problem: white smudges on the outer rim of the discs reflecting lousy quality control. The “verbatim” brand name was evidently licensed by a less assiduous manufacturer in Japan. The manufacturer part numbers for these turkeys: VBR260RP100SV1, VBR260YP50V1 No brand of media is perfectly reliable. From burning discs of various types for 20 years I’ve learned to burn at the slowest available speed. The time investment is worth it because the output has less immediate and long term failures. With Blu-ray, I’ve never seen burning problems with 25 GB, single layer format. The 50 GB, dual layer format fails occasionally even with best quality, Verbatim media. Always use “Verify” mode with your burning software – some errors are not detected during writing, but appear later on reading. I’ve used some of the budget brands of blu-ray media and they worked fine, but I’ve only tried budget brands with single layer 25 GB, and then only a small sample size. The test of a media brand comes with the more problematic dual layer format. It takes a lot of experience to figure out whether an annoying failure rate is coming from hardware, software or media. I expect there are many good software burning packages. I suspected that the burner within my DVDFab suite was a factor in producing errors with 50 GB discs. I tried Cyberlink’s Power2Go burning software and it cut down my coaster rate sharply. Power2Go is the most reliable software I’ve ever used, better even than the venerable ImgBurn freeware standard. I highly recommend Power2Go. I’ve used two quality external blu-ray burning drives, plus a low cost external drive. If you want top reliability with frequent use you must fork-out for the best external drive from ASUS or Buffalo. Any configuration of hardware/software/media has worked acceptably for me with 25 GB discs. For 50 GB I’ve found the Buffalo drive to be slightly more reliable than ASUS. More controlled, extensive testing would be needed to be definitive. edit: I see pioneer has just come out with an internal BD burner. A lot of people swear by that brand. Perhaps there are good internal drive options beyond what I've tested. This concludes my TED talk.
Review: Solid Choice to Burn any type of Content to that needs a BD-R - I needed some BD-Rs for PS4 "testing" purposes and these were well rated and cheap enough. I was able to get 3 discs burned just fine, and the discs worked in the PS4. I was interested to see what color they were on the bottom since original CD-Rs were blue, newer ones are light green, and DVD-Rs are a purple blue. It turns out BD-R discs are....dark grey. A bit anticlimactic, I know. I was hoping for a really pretty Blue. Oh well, they were easy to write, worked in what I needed it to, and that's good enough for me.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Are these LTH or HTL?**
A: These are HTL. The BDA (bluray disk association) has a rule that manufactures are supposed to specifically say "LTH Type" on the package label if the disks are LTH (Verbatim seems good about that, but I'm not sure if all manufactures are). So in theory, if it doesn't say LTH then it should be HTL. The HTL are considered better and more long lasting. LTH has been proven to be less reliable. I think (am not sure) that another way to tell is: If you are looking at verbatim disks and you see the logo "AZO" then it's probably HTL. In some charts I saw of various verbatim media, AZO and LTH were always together. In contrast, if you see "MABL" then you are probably looking at a better combination of materials. MABL is an inorganic recording material which should last longer than organic dyes. So... the fact that these disks (verbatim #98397) say "MABL" and do not say LTH means that these should be a long lasting medium. I bought a 50 disc spindle of these... but haven't used them yet.

**Q: i am not tech savvy at all, but since these discs are titled BD-R does that mean it will only play in some types of players? am referring to the whole dvd-r and dvd+r situation, where dvd+r was more popular then dvd-r as it played in more dvd players.**
A: That's a good question. These BD-R discs can only be authored using a Blu-Ray burner, and if authored as a video disc, they will work in most Blu-Ray players. I haven't sent a ton of these out the door, but I've never heard any complaints. There was no BD-R vs BD+R war. There was a competing technology, but Blu-Ray was up against HD DVDs, which was a completely different technology. Somehow, Blu-Ray won quickly and we averted WW III of the tech industry. As far as I know, there is no such thing as a BD+R.I think you'll have good success with these discs.

**Q: what are coasters?**
A: When burning discs, "coasters" are discs that fail to burn. Thus they are ruined and only suitable to use as table coasters.

**Q: May I print some text or pictures on the disk surface using Inkjet Printer?**
A: Not on these disks. There are others which allow you to do that. They have uniformly white surfaces. These disks do not. You CAN write on them with an indelible ink marker but that is it.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Perfect for large permanent back-ups.
*by A***N on March 9, 2026*

I have always preferred Verbatim or Maxell discs for long term use and storage. After thirty years those I burned are still 100% intact and data is perfectly readable without glitches. Never burned a coaster that was not my own fault. Never saw reason to change. Proper storage and care in handling is paramount for any disk. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
