There is a momentary pause between each "shush" so it is not a continuous sound like the hair dryer. When my baby is really upset, nothing is as effective as the hair dryer. Period. But the shusher is obviously more convenient--no cord, no blowing air, etc. I like the shusher but at this point, I use the HoMedics Sound Spa on the Go even more--the white noise function can be turned up loud and it's small enough to go with us anywhere.
