    Does what it says

I was super excited to receive my Pancake Pen, when it arrived the cap of the pen was cracked, this is a slight bummer because the cap can be used to measure as it has markings on it. No biggie, I have a ton of measuring cups that will have to do as return shipping makes it not worth getting a replacement. It states you can mix the batter in the container which you can but the mouth of the Pancake Pen isn't very wide so spillage is likely to occur, if you have a kitchen funnel, now is the time to use it! I had no problem pouring in my liquids it was just the dry stuff I struggled with. The pancake pen has markings on the side, I assume for measurement however I couldn't read the side of the bottle. It's a useless feature for me. My first attempt was successful. I mixed the batter. Word to the wise and the not very bright, you have to cover the nozzle of the Pancake Pen with your finger unless you want to paint your kitchen in pancake batter, I've read a few reviews stating they had batter all over their kitchen, although the nozzle hole is small it's not that small and there is no stopper. So just throw the top on, slap a finger over the hole and give it a shake (think shaking a giant baby bottle) and voila! Pancake mix is mixed! I think this is where the cap comes in handy however like I said, mine is cracked and won't stay on top of the Pancake Pen. Controlling how the pancake batter comes out is another story it takes some getting used to but I will say this, aside from not using a funnel for the dry mix and getting powder on the floor I really have no mess. Usually when I make pancakes batter drips off my measuring cups and if left to dry up it's like chiseling cement off a counter top.The Pancake Pen is 5 pieces. There is the cap and then the screw on lid, inside the lid is where the silicone piece slides in that is where the batter comes out, this can be pulled out for cleaning. Then there is the body of the pen and then the screw on end. It's very easy to clean, everything comes apart easily you don't even need a bottle brush!I imagine if you were creative you could find other ways to use this tool in your kitchen.Overall this is nice and it keeps my kitchen clean and keeps me from making a mess with a whisk and mixing bowls and measuring cups. My 10 year old daughter wants to make pancakes this weekend and experiment with shapes and writing her name in pancake batter.

    Not good for mixing

I really wanted to love this pen, and the reviews were great so I went for it. I bought it so I could make and dispense pancakes while camping. I put the dry ingredients in the pen at home before leaving. I noticed the first issue immediately which was that the nozzle itself has no cap on it. The overall cap for the pen is a snap-on design that would be easy to jostle and snap off in transit. So I put a layer of plastic wrap between the pen and the screw on top to keep flour from coming out through the nozzle. When it was time to make the pancakes I discovered the plastic wrap had ripped a little around the screw threads but the overall cap hadn't come off, so there had been no flour explosion. Still happy with it at this point.I added the eggs and milk to the pen and started shaking. I had to put my thumb over the nozzle while shaking due to issue with being unable to seal the nozzle itself. If I'd just put the cap on while shaking, the area between the nozzle and cap would have become a mess.As I pressed my thumb to the nozzle I discovered that the nozzle and the screw-on cap are two separate pieces. The nozzle dropped into the pen and got lost in the batter. Ugh. I'd have to fish it out later, but I was still in the middle of trying to mix the batter and the dry ingredients in the bottom (about the bottom 2 inches) were refusing to mix with the wet ingredients. There's nothing inside the pen to help with the mixing. My thumb wasn't quite large enough to cover the remaining hole without batter sneaking past as I did the shaking but I was able to avoid too much of a mess by shaking away from me and toward a bush. I finally had to grab a spoon to try mixing the stubborn dry ingredients from the bottom (having a screw-on bottom IS a nice feature). I was never able to get the lumps mixed into the batter to a reasonable level. I know it's okay to have some lumps remaining in pancake batter, but this was ridiculous. They sometimes blocked the nozzle as I was dispensing (yes, I wound up dumping the batter into a separate bowl to try to fish out the nozzle which took away the the convenience of mixing and pouring in a single device) and I had to break many of them up with the spatula after pouring.Perhaps I could have shaken up the dry ingredients to loosen them before putting in the wet to allow for easier mixing, but the narrow body probably isn't the best vessel for mixing anyway. But for me, not having a little rubber cap or something for the nozzle caused me to conclude that this just wasn't the solution to my camping pancake issue. If there were a way of blocking the nozzle I wouldn't have had to block it with my thumb resulting in losing the nozzle into the batter.

    Good, I guess?

My first pancake batter pen, something I thought I would never get. I got it because I thought it would be helpful to make rounder pancakes and it would be nifty with filling muffin cups, etc., and if I ever decided to try my hand at pancake art. I used it and came up with the following notes:- Use something with a pourable lip to fill the pen, or else your batter will start going everywhere. Oops. I mixed/prepared my batter in a separate bowl; it's not the throw-in-and-shake kind of batter.- A runnier batter would probably be better. I used a whole grain, flax batter mix. There weren't any big issues as it dispensed readily with a gentle squeeze, but I feel like it would be easier with a lighter, runnier batter. I'm thinking that the batter I used wouldn't be too good for pancake art, either.- Some batter will remain inside the pen, so you'll have to open it to get the remainder out.- There are some measuring lines on the pen itself in cups (up to 3) and mL (up to 700). The nozzle is a soft silicone material. There is a rubber lining of sorts on both screw on lids to prevent leakage. I had no issues with leaking.- Its easy to clean, since both the top and bottom caps unscrew.- A cap is included as per the photo and I imagine you should be able to close it and prepare the batter ahead of time so you have batter ready in the morning. Convenient!
