The Thompson & Morgan Gooseberry ‘Hinnonmaki Yellow’ is a hardy, easy-to-grow bare root fruit bush that produces heavy crops of sweet, golden berries each summer. Compact and adaptable, it thrives in full sun or partial shade and yields over 3kg of delicious fruit per plant, perfect for fresh eating or cooking. Supplied as a 2-year-old pruned plant with care instructions, it’s the ideal addition for gardeners seeking a reliable, flavorful summer harvest.

## Description

Easy to grow and reliable gooseberry bushes are extremely rewarding, producing heavy crops each summer. Gooseberry ‘Hinnonmaki Yellow’ produces an abundant crop of beautiful golden fruit. Their exceptionally sweet flavour has a slight hint of apricot which is partly what makes it stand out among other varieties. The lovely, juicy berries are delicious eaten fresh and can also be cooked, making a lovely jam or as an addition to a dessert or crumble. Cropping from June to mid-July, they’re a great way to start the fruit season, each bush capable of producing over 3kg of berries. Our established 2 year old bareroot plants are supplied ready pruned.Plant in an open sunny position on any well drained soil. Prior to planting, incorporate a generous amount of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Remove any shoots or dormant buds from the base of the plant as these will produce unwanted suckers later on. Gooseberries should be planted at a distance of 1.5m (5') apart at their original depth which is indicated by a mark left on the stem by the nursery soil.Water well for the first year until plants are fully established. When growing gooseberries, the soil must not dry out during hot periods, particularly while the fruit is being formed. Remove any suckers from the base of the plant as they arise. Netting will help to protect the currants from birds. Harvest for cooking and freezing in May, leaving the remaining fruit to ripen fully in June for eating fresh from the bush. Prune in winter. Remove dead, damaged and crossing stems, before thinning the remaining stems to create an upright open bush. Shorten the remaining stems by half.
