The "smoke" comes out like underarm deodorant, or air freshener. It's dry, and dissipates almost immediately. I simply aim it at the smoke alarm, and press for a short spray. If that isn't enough to trigger the alarm, I give the tester button a longer press until the alarm goes off. I usually takes less than a 1-2 second spray to trigger the alarm, and then it takes 10-20 seconds for the alarm to stop blaring. I like this product. Simply pressing the "test" button on a smoke alarm only tells you if the battery is working or not. It doesn't let you know if the "sensor" in the smoke alarm works. **Q: The ad says free shipping but when I placed an order for one can to New York state, a shipping charge was showing in the check out.
