How do I know if this is a left or right pedal. Not very clear.** A: It is a set of two. Nice quality and screws can be adjusted to the height you want. Pedals are screwed counterwise and I think they came marked right or left. Don't worry you will be happy with them. **Q: are these good for general in town riding or specifically for mtb trail or dirt biking?** A: They are sturdy and are highly effective at gripping all shoe types. While I predominantly use my bike off trail, I do ride a good bit on roads, and they work fine!! Grip keeps your feet in place. The pins don’t come through or damage the bottom of the shoe. If pins are felt, they provide the tool needed to lower or raise them. Pedals went on without a hitch. Just make sure you place them on the correct side. They are very light and turn effortlessly. Great price and excellent performance.
