It would act the same as a cold frame. I have overwintered plants in mine before. They all survived. I was careful not to overwater as water freezes and harms the plants. **Q: Can you take shelves out to allow for taller plants?** A: Yes you can they are all removable. I would have liked more bracket clips to hold the shelves more securely so I have had to use cable ties to secure it a bit more. There seems plenty of room for a few different sized plants and great for little seedlings which I will be doing early next year.
